Police are warning motorists to watch out for non-contracted tow truck drivers, after one driver was billed more than $4,000 for a lift. The vehicle was towed from Scarborough to east of Durham Region at a rate of $11 per kilometre. Contracted tow companies are chosen by police every three years in an open bidding process and currently only charge between $2.25 to $3.50 per kilometre for a similar trip. A basic tow is even cheaper, ranging from $85 to $135 depending on the distance and vehicle. Durham Regional Sergeant Nancy van Rooy said police have received at least two complaints in the last few months about non-contracted tow truck drivers overcharging customers.
