Gunshots rattle ‘safe’ community

Ten people, including children, were inside when the two shotgun blasts were fired into the home, but no one was injured. Police recovered two shell casings from the bullets and found a shotgun on a neighbour's lawn.
Lissa Siskind and her family moved to the Bathurst and Lawrence area three years ago because they thought it was one of the city’s safest neighbourhoods.
At 12:30 a. m. yesterday, a friend called to tell her shots had just been fired through the front door of an upscale home in the neighbourhood, at 613 St. Germain Ave.
The area was filled with the flashing lights of police cruisers as officers closed off the area to investigate.
“I was shocked. You just don’t expect it in this area,” she said. “It’s an affluent area. It’s such a family neighbourhood. I’ve always felt safe here.”
By yesterday morning, the large round hole in the glass door was covered with a sheet of neon pink bristol board, and the door was removed and replaced by early afternoon.
Toronto Police Constable Tony Vella said 10 people, including children, were inside when the two shotgun blasts were fired into the home, but no one was injured. Police recovered two shell casings from the bullets and found a shotgun on a neighbour’s lawn.
The home can be seen from the schoolyard of Ledbury Park Elementary and Middle School, less than a block away. About 500 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8 attend the school. Ms. Siskind said she often passes the home on her morning walks and has never witnessed anything unusual until now. “[St. Germain Avenue] is usually one of the quietest streets.”
Const. Vella said no one has been arrested yet and the residents of the home, who refused to comment on the incident, are not known to police.
